Base Affirmative Action on Wealth & Family Status

I've heard a few things about the long term benefits received by whites before minorities stopped being excluded in the 50s and 60s - land-ownership, home loans, education, etc - and I think that justifies more time with Affirmative Action. But I really like the idea of colleges focusing on income and family backgrounds, too, or maybe even more:

"If colleges gave students credit for coming from a low-income ZIP code, black and Latino students would benefit enormously, as they would from the consideration of wealth and family status. Only 27 percent of white students grow up in a single-parent family, compared with 60 percent of black children and 34 percent of Latino children."
